DRM is a way to prevent unauthorized redistribution of eBooks.  With your purchase of a DRM-protected ebook, you will be able to download your eBook to your computer/eReader/handheld device, and to 5 other devices you own.  All downloads are tied to your Adobe ID which must be entered prior to downloading your eBook.

eBooks that are copy-protected with DRM must be downloaded and read using Adobe Digital Editions or software that is compatible with Adobe DRM.  Adobe® Digital Editions software offers an engaging way to view and manage eBooks and other digital publications. Use it to download and purchase digital content, which can be read both online and offline.  You must register your Adobe Digital Editions account in order to read our DRM protected content.  To download or read more about Adobe Digital Editions click here.

Yes. After logging into our online eBook store, click on My Account at the top of the page, then click on My eLibrary. You may also access your My eLibrary here.

PDF titles that are not DRM protected may be read offline on a computer or handheld device using the latest free version of Adobe Reader.

ePub and PDF titles that are DRM protected are readable offline on a computer or handheld device using the free software Adobe Digital Editions.

Offline content may also be read using any eReader compatible device, see our eReader Hardware Guide for more details.

Please use our Contact Us form for all technical-related questions. A representative will respond to your question within one business day.

The DFCC is published by Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. periodically.  The last edition, before the 2016 edition, was published in 2010.  Due to the tremendous time and commitment required by the authors to write the DFCC, it is not published annually.  The next edition will be available when time and resources allow.

Intro to eBooks

The term eBook refers to an electronic version of a printed book. eBooks can be read on a variety of devices in addition to eReader software on devices such as mobile phones and personal computers.

eReader devices are hardware devices that function primarily to display eBooks.

eReader software is a program that allows the reading of eBooks (or non-native eBook formats) on additional hardware devices, such as personal computers or mobile phones.  For more information see our eReader Software Guide.

PDF eBook: PDF eBooks are essentially electronic versions of the printed volume and thus include page numbering. PDF eBooks have a static layout with set page breaks. Although PDF eBooks do not automatically adjust to fit your screen, you can zoom in on a page or graphic. This format is best viewed on your computer or device with a larger screen. PDF eBooks are readable on your computer and iPad using Adobe Digital Editions (download for free) and on Android devices using Aldiko (download for free).

ePub eBook: in contrast to PDF eBooks, ePub eBooks will automatically adjust to fit your screen. ePub eBooks do not include page numbers, and the text reflows as the reader increases or decreases the font size. This format is best viewed on your computer or a device with a smaller screen. Like the PDF eBook, ePubs are readable on your computer and iPad using Adobe Digital Editions (download for free) and on Android devices using Aldiko (download for free). Please see our eReader Software Guide for more information.

eBook formats

PDF eBook – PDF’s preserve the original page layout and can be great for note taking and annotations.  Because they present pages in a static format they are not suited for small mobile devices.  For readability, PDF eBooks are best read on computers or laptops.

ePub eBook – ePub’s are presented in reflowable text. Because they adapt their presentation to the size of the output device they are ideal for mobile devices such as tablets and cell phones.

Both PDF and ePub formats are protected content and must be downloaded and read using Adobe Digital Editions or software compatible with Adobe DRM.

Online Web eBook - our Online Web eBook option allows you to access your content from anywhere, anytime and on all of your favorite devices, with no software to download!  Our browser-based eReader means that you can access your ebook on any Internet-enabled device including tablets, smartphones, desktops, and laptops.
